Skilled workforce vital to the prosperity of East Lancashire says Regional Minister Beverley Hughes
Tuesday 5 May 2009
A highly skilled workforce is vital to the prosperity of East Lancashire, Minister for the North West Beverley Hughes told local businesses.
The Minister was speaking at a meeting to discuss the effects of the current economic downturn and outline the Government's response, including the latest budget measures.
The meeting in the Globe Centre in Accrington heard that the Government was investing millions of pounds in education and training to ensure that the region emerged stronger than before with an improved skills base.
The money will help to address the deficit in high-level skills in Pennine Lancashire, which also has more than the North West average of people with no qualifications.
The meeting was held in advance of a meeting of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) for the North West. The Commission brings together key players from the public and private sectors to fight the North West's corner during the economic downturn.
Minister for the North West Beverley Hughes said:
"The economic downturn has had a huge impact and all of us have a part to play in making sure the region is best placed to deal with its consequences.
"A highly skilled workforce is vital to the prosperity of East Lancashire and the whole of the North West. We believe in a fair chance for all, which is why this Government is investing in training and skills.
"The local authorities in Pennine Lancashire already have a target of raising skill levels by four per cent which will help half a million people. In addition a proposed 'Graduate into industry' scheme will aim to attract and retain highly skills and qualified people in Lancashire at the new Pennine Lancashire University.
"East Lancashire has a £6 billion economy which is ripe for growth. With a highly skilled workforce East Lancashire can look forward to economic growth."
