Regional Minister Backs Young Britain
Monday 15 February 2010
Phil Woolas spoke at the event and answered questions from an invited audience to promote the Government’s Backing Young Britain campaign. The Backing Young Britain Campaign aims to bring national and local Government, businesses and the public and voluntary sectors together to create new opportunities for young people aged 16-24. This can be through offering an Apprenticeship, giving a young person a job or providing experience of work.
The event was hosted by Tim Campbell, founder of the Bright Ideas Trust – a charity investing in young business start-ups, and Mr Woolas. They were joined on the panel by Sue Riley, Jobcentre Plus District Manager for Merseyside and Stephen Roberts, General Manager of Crowne Plaza Hotel Liverpool (pictured in photo “BYB144 Panel”). At the event Mr Woolas met with employers who are already Backing Young Britain, such as the Everton Foundation who have taken on two young people, Anthony Thurogood, 22, and David Evers, 18. Mr Woolas said:
"This government is doing its bit in Backing Young Britain and I urge every employer to sign up to the campaign. Giving our young people the opportunity of an apprenticeship, job or work experience is a win-win situation for employers and it would be fantastic if everyone at the Breakfast (today) would do that and help them get a good start to their working life."
Speaking after the event Tim Campbell said:
“I really enjoyed today’s event in Liverpool, the business people that came were extremely positive, and I hope we have been able to encourage them to support the campaign. Backing Young Britain is a really positive initiative that can bring real benefits to young people and to businesses.”
